Talon Shadow is a rugged roadside ALPR processor designed to withstand extreme environmental conditions and execute ‘on the spot’ roadside processing of license plates. The system comprises of a shoe box-sized computer running Talon SP ALPR software and a Windows operating system. It is designed to fit inside existing road-side furniture such as street-side service cabinets.Reduced installation and maintenance costs

The key advantage of the Shadow system is the reduced installation and maintenance costs, by eliminating the need to install and maintain expensive fiber optic or wireless transmission media to a central processing site and send raw video to an ‘instation’ site. The transmission of good quality live video can only be achieved with certain technologies that are costly to install and maintain.

The Shadow camera inputs are processed by the ALPR software at the roadside and therefore only processed data such as license plate patch information and JPEG images are sent to the central site via GSM / GPRS, WiFi, dedicated fiber or BT circuits, for example. The packet size of each individual read is minimal meaning that the cost to send ALPR data and images is very cost effective.

Key Features

  • Rugged ‘zero’ maintenance construction: Manufactured from heavy duty aluminium with one cooling fan, minimizing the number of moving parts and maintenance requirements. Large heat sinks protect the system from temperature extremes. Engineered for extreme conditions – designed and tested to operate in extreme heat (+104F). Key internal parts are protected using dampers, preventing vibration damage from passing vehicles.
  • Small in size, big in power: The size of the shadow unit (195mm x 107mm x 268mm) offers flexibility in deployment combined with built-on mounting brackets. Fitted with a Pentium M processor, each shadow unit can process multiple ALPR cameras.
  • Well connected: The unit comes with a host of interfaces and connections.
  • Alarm monitoring/reporting: Software monitoring to detect internal failure, i.e. camera/video failure, over temperature, CPU temperature and recognition degradation. External alarm monitoring (via hardware interface) i.e. Tamper, mains failure, UPS shut down, cabinet temperature, comms failure via internal GSM/GPRS modem.
  • Secure: Message queuing software with built in encryption and guaranteed message delivery. Image signing with authentication signature prevents evidence tampering. Block Cipher (RC2, DES, 3DES, AES and stream cipher (RC4) algorithms are supported.
